DOUGLAS LAING & CO. are independent and family owned Scotch Whisky blenders. With millions of pounds worth of maturing stocks in our name, quality control is essential for our business, which is geared mainly towards the Premium packaging of gourmet and aged Scotch Whiskies. In the process of this Q.C. our Master Blender has long been aware of different and often better nuances on a cask-to-cask basis in Malts even from the same distilleries, distilled in the same “batch”. That being so, often for his own interest and pleasure, these casks were chalk marked over the years, for special attention and on-going reviews, allowing us to say they have been truly “hand-selected”. We now offer these single casks for filling within the OLD MALT CASK range to mature and knowledgeable Scotch malt markets at various ages from 10 up to 36 years.

In the mid-1960’s, the Scotch Whisky industry introduced the policy of chill-filtering their Scotch Whiskies (by reducing the temperature of the Scotch to Minus 3 - 8 degrees, before filling into bottle). This gave an immediate clarity to the Scotch, although it was acknowledged that it also removed many of the quality features of nose and taste from the Whisky. The OLD MALT CASK, without apology, reinstates a simple filtration method, leaving in the bottle, the full body, resonance and glory of the original distillation and the secret of the wood. These Malts are bottled at the chosen high strength of 50% ABV.

As months and years of distillation/bottling are important to the connoisseur market, this information is highlighted on the label, together with the specific age. Similarly to indicate the restricted nature of these individual bottlings, the boxed information also highlights that this is one bottle from a yield of only 190 or 202 bottles etc. being made available. Truly this is guarded stock, being sold by allocation. The packaging selected is classic in its Malt heritage, yet it has an immediate eye-catching appeal, which is further continued through the hexagonal gift box (which exactly reflects the contents of each individual bottle).
